Before June 29,1906 it was rather easy to become an American citizen. After having been in the country for at least 5 years and at least 3 years after having reached the age of 21, it required merely petitioning the court of record, whether it be at federal, state, county or municipal level. After June 29,1906, becoming a citizen became a more time-consuming four stage process. Fecko Szczur became an American citizen on April 21, 1906. I seems likely that he anticipated the soon-to-come complications.
