Mary, Steve, Helen, John and Olga standing on Bald Mountain Road, probably about 1930
Years later Helen's odd posture in this photograph became a source of consternation within the family, but Mary explains what happened:
"I remember that picture. I remember being there. We all got washed up somewhere and put on our best clothes. I don't remember if it was just for the picture taking or something else. Annie, my mother's sister, had a camera. Maybe she borrowed it from someone at church, I don't know. She was the one that took the picture. We all got lined up on Bald Mountain Road to get our picture taken when somebody said, "Hurry up there's a car coming." That's why Helen looks like she's on the starting line in a race. I think if you look behind us real close you can see the car."
